Austria Post

Austria Post improves mail delivery times and increases customer satisfaction with high-speed sortation and tray management systems from Crisplant.

Austria Post transports more than one billion letters and postcards every year. Add to this 2.5 billion info mails and 800 million newspapers. In order to respond to the constantly increasing demands for quality and earnings in a very competitive market, Austria Post decided to bring its logistic network up to date.

Briefzentrum Wien Cross-belt Sorting System

Austria Post built the mail centre “Briefzentrum Wien” (BZW) for which Austria Post made a changeover to complete handling and routing in totes using barcodes in a tray management system. As the supplier and integrator of the backbone of this complete automation solution, Crisplant delivered and installed the following sorting equipment:

ADS (Arrival and dispatch sorter)

  • Crisplant Cross-Belt type S3000
  • pitch 750mm
  • 2.1 m/s
  • 10,000 items/hour
  • 89 destinations incl. discharge to belts for further split between processes
  • 10 induction stations
  • OH scanners

RBS (Restmail and Bundles sorter)

  • Crisplant Cross-Belt type S3000
  • pitch 550
  • 2.0 m/s
  • 15,000 items/hour
  • 198 destination chutes (sorting directly into trays)
  • 10 induction stations
  • OCR and VCS (2 off) encoding stations

The entire integration of the automation technique is carried out using the ADS and conveyors as the backbone (distribution medium) for all processes. The tray management system has a special feature where the use of the Crisplant Cross-belt sorter allows the ADS to be used for both ingoing and outgoing mail with a throughput of 10,000 items/h.
