  • Short-listed for Automation Product of the Year category in Postal Technology 2011 Awards
  • LS-4000flexbelt sorter sets new benchmarks for capacity and flexibility in postal sortation
  • Carries two items per belt and discharges each item to a different destination
  • Based on the industry’s most energy-efficient sorter technology
  • Allows the postal sector to reduce costs by increasing capacity, flexibility and energy efficiency

Crisplant announces that the Crisplant LS-4000flexbelt sorter has been shortlisted for the Automation Technology of the Year category in the Postal Technology 2011 awards.

The LS-4000flexbelt sorter introduces a new two-belt configuration which allows the sorter to carry two items side by side on the same belt, and to discharge each item to a different destination. Both items can be discharged to the left, to the right, or to different sides of the belt. This allows the LS-4000flexbelt sorter to effectively double sorter capacity whilst also significantly increasing flexibility.

To support the new FlexBelt technology, Crisplant has developed new machine and system controls based on the controls for the proven LS-4000 cross-belt sorter. The three-level control system comprises embedded software for the controller boards on the cross-belt units; a Crisplant Machine Control (CMC) module; and upper-level Crisplant System Controls (CSC). These controls can be integrated seamlessly with existing IT systems to allow the new LS-4000flexbelt sorter to be installed quickly and with little or no disruption to the normal operation of the existing system.

The LS-4000flexbelt sorter combines the new benchmarks for sorter flexibility and capacity with the industry’s most energy-efficient drive technology. This reduces energy consumption by up to 75% and minimises maintenance costs compared to sorters with conventional motor technologies, allowing the postal sector to further reduce handling costs for items such as flats and parcels.

Crisplant Logistic Director, Henrik Mortensen, explains; “The future of intelligent, automated sortation, within the postal industry, lies in increasing both the flexibility and capacity of the sorters. There is, however, a limit to the increase in capacity that can be achieved simply by increasing the speed of the sorter. By thinking ‘outside the box’ Crisplant has developed an innovative sorter technology which effectively doubles capacity and significantly increases flexibility whilst building on the industry-leading energy-efficiency of the LS-4000 sorter.”

Work on installing the first LS-4000flexbelt sorter, at a major distribution centre in Spain, started in August 2011 with hand-over scheduled for 2012.
